As professional performers and teachers of Argentine Tango, with varied backgrounds in jazz, contemporary and classical dance, Tango Con*Fusión creates a fusion of genres within their choreography.
A couple’s dance morphs into a solo or collective interaction, leaders and followers exchange roles, free movement is added and stories are told.
As women trained and versed in traditional Argentine Tango, we deeply respect traditional tango, yet love to lead, follow or exchange roles, regardless of gender. Our repertoire spans the spectrum from slick-haired classic to feather-ruffling experimental, with Argentine Tango as the imperative backbone of the work.
Since its inception in January 2004, Tango Con*Fusión has performed original choreography in two ground-breaking, all-female tango stage shows with live music and international casts:
Leading Ladies of Tango – December 2006,
Herbst Theatre/San Francisco; and
Glamour Tango – May 2009,
Logan Square Auditorium/Chicago).
Tango Con*Fusión has also been featured in a documentary playing on the international tango film festival circuit and national television networks (Latin Eyes & Univisión).
Other projects include the second International Queer Tango Festival/Buenos Aires, the first International Queer Tango Festival/San Francisco, and the International Dance Festival/New York City and in modern dance venues of the San Francisco Bay Area such as the WestWave Dance Festival at YBCA Theater – August 2008.
In 2010 we were selected from over 70 applicants from the US and abroad to receive a grant via Dance Mission to premiere Vorágine, a half-evening-length work, in the Down & Dirty Dance Series at Dance Mission Theater/San Francisco. That same year we accepted the prestigious invitation to perform at Congreso Internacional de Tango Argentino in Buenos Aires, and again in 2014. We also performed with the Grammy-nominated band, Tanghetto, in 2011 and 2012 in Buenos Aires and Montevideo.
From 2012-2017 we developed a cultural exchange with legendary dancer/teacher Johana Copes for her annual Lady's Tango Festival held in Buenos Aires in March and organized the San Francisco branch of the Lady's Tango Festival held in September from 2012-2017.
In the summer of 2018, Tango Con*Fusión traveled to Europe where we performed at Berlin’s Queer Tango Festival then continued onto Spain where we danced in the milongas of Barcelona and Sites. The performances in Berlin were so well received that we were invited back to be the featured teachers and performers for the 2019 Berlin Queer Tango Festival.
As Covid hit in late 2019-2021 TCF continued to create and presented 2 online video performances “Quarantine Milonga” and “Tango Conversations”.
Since reconvening after Covid, the company's 3 active members, Debbie Goodwin, Rose Vierling & Carolina Rozensztroch collaborated with Corporación Tango in their show "Remembrance" performed at SF Dance e Mission.
Currently, the company is preparing for its 20th anniversary in January 2024 and is inviting all former TCF dancers to join in the celebration.
